Polsinelli welcomes well-known, white collar defense attorney William B. Mateja to its Dallas office as an equity shareholder. With extensive knowledge in a variety of white collar defense matters, and an emphasis on health care and securities enforcement, Mateja joins the firm’s national White Collar Defense & Government Investigations Practice Group, and will also focus heavily on health care fraud and abuse matters.

“We are pleased that Bill has chosen Polsinelli. He is an accomplished white collar attorney and among the best defense attorneys in the country, with a career including experience at the DOJ and in private practice,” said Dallas Office Managing Partner Jon Henderson. “He adds valuable skills to benefit our clients, and will positively impact our growing health care practice in Texas and beyond.”

Mateja’s practice focuses on the representation of companies and individuals in high-stakes government and internal investigations, civil enforcement actions, criminal prosecutions, regulatory actions and civil lawsuits across the country. His work will encompass an array of subject matters, including health care fraud and abuse, securities enforcement, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, public corruption, money laundering and other government and regulatory matters and investigations.

“I’m proud to join the Polsinelli team and have the opportunity to collaborate with attorneys across many practice areas,” said Mateja. “I’m particularly excited to continue my work with health care companies who might find themselves the unfortunate subject of a government investigation. I’ve handled numerous health care enforcement matters over the last 20 years and know that I can ably lend a helping hand.”

As the former Senior Counsel to U.S. Deputy Attorneys General Larry Thompson and James Comey, now the head of the FBI, Mateja was responsible for all of the Justice Department’s white collar operations and the daily workings of President George W. Bush’s Corporate Fraud Task Force. He also oversaw the DOJ’s white collar, health care fraud and corporate fraud investigations and prosecutions. Mateja will continue to serve as counsel to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in an ongoing state securities fraud case filed earlier this year.

“Bill’s reputation and accomplishments add to a growing Dallas office in a significant way,” said White Collar Defense & Government Investigations Practice Chair Edward Novak. “His work greatly complements our national practice and will increase our ability to serve clients in government investigations and white collar matters.”

Mateja was recognized last December as one of only 50 lawyers nationally named “White-Collar Crime Trailblazers for 2015” by The National Law Journal. Active in the bar, he serves on the Dallas Bar’s Board of Directors and chaired its 2015-16 Equal Access to Justice Campaign, which eclipsed the $1 million mark last month. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the ABA White Collar Crime Sub-region Co-Chair for North Texas and Oklahoma. He previously served as the President of the Texas Young Lawyers Association and served on the State Bar of Texas’ Board of Directors from 1996-99. He also continues to teach at Texas Tech University School of Law as an adjunct professor. Mateja earned his law degree from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1986 after obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1983.
