Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced that Michael P. Lennon Jr. has joined the firm in Houston as a partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice and International Arbitration group. Previously, he was a partner with Baker Botts in Houston.

“Mike is an experienced arbitration practitioner and trial lawyer with an outstanding track record for handling a wide variety of arbitration and litigation matters, particularly in the energy, natural resources and construction sectors,” said Bill Knull, a Houston senior partner in Mayer Brown’s global International Arbitration group. “We are delighted to welcome him to Mayer Brown.”

“Arbitration is the preferred mechanism for resolving transnational disputes in many parts of the world, and Mike’s extensive experience in high profile cases will further enhance our ability to act for clients with international arbitration matters around the globe,” said Raid Abu-Manneh, London partner and co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global International Arbitration group.

Mr. Lennon acts on behalf of clients before the leading international arbitral institutions, including ICSID, ICC, LCIA and the Dubai International Arbitration Centre, as well as national courts. He has a distinguished record as a trial lawyer and arbitration advocate and has tried numerous cases before arbitral tribunals, courts, and juries, as well as enforcement, annulment and appellate proceedings arising from his matters. He also acts as an arbitrator. In addition, Mr. Lennon has substantial experience handling intellectual property and other commercial disputes.

“Mayer Brown’s International Arbitration group has the geographic reach, proven experience and bench strength needed to successfully handle clients’ most significant arbitration matters,” Mr. Lennon said. “Also important in my decision to join Mayer Brown were the firm’s strong capabilities in the energy and construction industries and other complementary practice areas. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across the firm’s vast global network in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Europe to serve clients on a broad range of cases.”

Mr. Lennon’s energy and natural resources experience covers a wide range of arbitrated and litigated matters, including disputes involving production sharing agreements, licenses, concessions and other host state agreements, oil and gas royalty disputes, pricing and other disputes under short and long-term commodity agreements, disputes arising out of joint operating and joint venture agreements, disputes concerning the design, operation and management of drilling rigs, disputes involving nuclear and conventional power plant design, construction and operation, and other arbitration and litigation matters arising out of commercial disputes in the energy and natural resources sectors.

Recent examples of his work in the energy and natural resource areas include advising international oil companies on contractual and international law issues arising out of the Middle East, North Africa and South America, advising a major international engineering and construction company on a dispute arising from a mining project in Africa, and acting for a UK oil and gas company in LCIA arbitration involving a rig management agreement.

“Mike’s arrival further underscores Mayer Brown’s strong commitment to serving the energy industry in Houston and around the world while continuing the firm’s positive momentum in the international arbitration space,” said Neil Wasserstrom, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown’s Houston office.

Mr. Lennon earned a JD with high distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law and received a BS with honors from the University of Iowa. He serves on the advisory board of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration and the advisory board of the Institute for Energy Law (IEL) of The Center for American and International Law and was recently appointed as co-chair of IEL’s 2015 Oil & Gas Energy Conference.
