Reed Smith LLP today announced the addition of Nicolas (“Nic”) Barzoukas and Joshua (“Josh”) Davis as partners in the firm’s Intellectual Property, Information & Innovation (“IPII”) Practice Group. Both will join the Houston office, and both practiced most recently at Baker Botts. The addition of Barzoukas and Davis follows closely on the addition of IP partner Lisa Chiarini, who joined the firm’s New York office last month in February.

“Nic and Josh’s practices are an ideal fit for us,” said James Hultquist, co-practice group leader for Reed Smith’s international IPII Practice Group. “Their combined experience in patent litigation and life sciences is a perfect complement to our existing life sciences IP practice, and our expanded capabilities with Nic and Josh will be of great interest to our pharmaceutical and other life sciences clients.”

Barzoukas’ primary focus is representing pharmaceutical companies throughout the United States in significant patent litigation matters. Davis also has significant experience representing pharmaceutical companies in patent infringement cases, and has litigated cases involving biotechnology, medical devices, semiconductor, wireless communications, and various software technologies as well.

Barzoukas earned his J.D. from The University of Texas Law School, where he was Order of the Coif, and an MBA and Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, in biochemistry from Baylor University. Davis received his J.D., with distinction, from Stanford Law School, and obtained a joint program Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in biomedical & electrical engineering, magna cum laude, from Duke University.

“We’re thrilled to have Nic and Josh join us,” said Ken Broughton, office managing partner of Reed Smith’s Houston office. “Our Houston office has grown by more than a dozen lawyers over the last year and now stands at 56 attorneys, and our IP practice is as busy as it’s ever been. The diverse technical backgrounds of our IP attorneys really set us apart in the Houston market – and adding Nic and Josh to the mix differentiates us even more.”

Reed Smith’s Intellectual Property, Information and Innovation Group comprises more than 100 attorneys worldwide and handles a range of IP matters for clients, including those involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, unfair competition and trade secrets, transactions, and domain name disputes. The attorneys have strong technical credentials, IP litigation skills, and jury trial experience, as well as extensive experience in the industries in which the firm’s clients operate.

Reed Smith’s Life Sciences Health Industry (LSHI) Group is dedicated to addressing and solving the problems of businesses operating in the pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology, life sciences and health care sectors. From product development and management requirements, to regulatory demands and litigation risks, the group represents virtually every type of entity operating in or related to the life sciences and health care industry, including all types of health care providers, such as hospitals and health systems, long-term care facilities, hospices, home health and rehabilitation providers, physicians, and others; and many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers.
