King & Spalding has recruited noted Texas appellate specialist Shawn Stephens as a partner in the tort and environmental litigation practice of its Houston office. Stephens joins King & Spalding from Baker Hostetler where she was a partner and leader of the Houston appellate practice.

“Shawn is an excellent appellate lawyer with an impressive list of accomplishments, and she adds significant strength to our Texas appellate practice,” said Robert E. “Bobby” Meadows, managing partner of King & Spalding’s Houston office. “We welcome Shawn to the firm.”

Stephens’ practice, which includes both state and federal appeals, involves jury charge preparation and argument, preparing and arguing post-trial and dispositive motions, trial-level error preservation, interlocutory appeals and mandamus actions, as well as traditional appeals. She also has substantial commercial trial experience. Stephens handles significant matters for clients, with a focus on the energy, healthcare and automotive sectors.

Stephens is board certified in civil appellate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is the first woman and the first Texan nationally certified in appellate law by the American Institute of Appellate Practice.

Stephens is active in numerous professional and community service organizations. She is a member of the board of trustees of the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society, a past president of the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists and a former executive committee member of the American Bar Association’s Council of Appellate Lawyers. Appointed to the Texas Commission on the Arts by Gov. Rick Perry, Stephens serves as its vice chair. In 2010, Houston Woman magazine named Stephens to its list of Houston’s 50 most influential women. She received an LL.M., with honors, in international economic law from the University of Houston Law Center, her J.D. from South Texas College of Law, and a B.A. from Baylor University.

“We are excited that Shawn has joined our team,” said Carol Wood, leader of King & Spalding’s tort and environmental practice. “Her extensive experience and exceptional skills in the energy sector add further depth and breadth to our litigation team. Our clients will be well-served by Shawn’s capabilities.”

“I have known many of King & Spalding’s lawyers for a long time, and I am delighted to be working with such talented practitioners,” said Stephens. “King & Spalding is well-known for its exceptional strengths in both energy and trial law, and I look forward to contributing to the continued growth and success of these areas.”
