Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP today announced a major victory for its client, UK-based Smith & Nephew, a worldwide leader in wound care.  On October 18, 2010, a Texas Federal Court ruled that patents licensed to San Antonio-based Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (KCI) on negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) are invalid.  NPWT is the treatment of difficult-to-heal open skin wounds with the application of negative pressure.

Law firm Thompson & Knight LLP has announced the opening of an office in San Antonio. Firm attorneys Jason Davis, Marina Garcia Marmolejo, and Michael McCrum will head the office, which focuses on complex litigation. This is Thompson & Knight’s fifth Texas office, with other locations in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston.

Mary Keller has joined Winstead’s Austin office as a shareholder in the Corporate and Securities Group. Her work deals mostly with insurance regulation and regulatory litigation. Keller was formerly an Associate Commissioner of Insurance at the Texas Department of Insurance, as well as a former Texas First Assistant Attorney General. Winstead has acquired 12 more Jenkens & Gilchrist lawyers, adding to the 18 they already hired from the San Antonio and Austin offices. Six of the new additions come from Winston’s Dallas headquarters; the other half are leaving the Austin office. Jenkens’ numbers have dropped to under 200 attorneys in recent weeks; it is rumored that most of the remaining Dallas lawyers will move to Hunton & Williams.

Ten lawyers from Jenkens & Gilchrist’s San Antonio office have joined Jackson Walker’s central Texas office. Four of the lawyers join as partner, one as of counsel, and the remaining five are associates. Two other attorneys from Jenkens are moving to Winstead’s San Antonio office. With the new additions, Jackson Walker’s office now has 30 lawyers. The decision to close Jenkens’ San Antonio office was made in January, and comes after the closing of the firm’s Houston and LA offices.
